Slow Tourism in Montreuil-sur-Mer

between the Bay of Somme and Boulogne-sur-Mer.

In the Pas-de-Calais, 2.5 hours from Paris, on the Opal Coast, between the Bay of Somme and Boulogne-sur-Mer, the charming fortified town of Montreuil-sur-Mer holds many surprises. First and foremost, its powerful, perfectly preserved ramparts bear witness to its past as a stronghold and can be explored along a nearly 3km walk, ideal for enjoying the wooded panorama of the surrounding area. At the heart of the picturesque upper town stands a 16th-century citadel built on the site of a former royal castle, redesigned by Vauban. Every summer, a sound and light show takes place there, immersing spectators in the world of one of Victor Hugo's major works: Les Misérables.

The writer was indeed inspired by Montreuil-sur-Mer to set his famous Jean Valjean, who became mayor of the town under the name Monsieur Madeleine. The vestiges of its prestigious past Montreuil-sur-Mer boasts numerous attractions: its Hôtel-Dieu and flamboyant Gothic chapel, its 12th-century Saint-Saulve Abbey, its 18th-century private mansions, its former tobacco factory, and its typical low-rise houses, all waiting to be discovered as you wander through its narrow streets and alleyways, including the romantic Rue du Clape-en-Haut, the steep Rue Cavée Saint-Firmin, and the cobbled Rue du Clape-en-Bas with its wattle-and-daub shops occupied by artisans.

In addition to this precious architectural heritage, there are many outdoor activities to enjoy. The beaches of the Opal Coast and the famous seaside resorts of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage and Berck-sur-Mer are only about ten kilometers away, but you can also enjoy fishing or canoeing/kayaking on the Canche River. Don't hesitate to contact us; we will be happy to advise you on discovering our beautiful region. Slow Tourism

The Hotel Loysel Le Gaucher is a strong advocate of slow tourism: a way of traveling that promotes slowness, quality over quantity, and sustainable modes of transport. Tourism that generates benefits for both you and the planet.

Slow tourism also benefits the local economy!

  • Local discovery: taking the time to stroll and discover places you surely wouldn't have noticed if you had stayed 24 hours or only driven through.
  • Environmental benefits: staying in one place encourages us to use our car, plane, or train less, and instead explore on foot or by bicycle.
  • Getting to know the locals: we take the time to see familiar faces for a few days in a row and take the plunge to approach these residents, build relationships, or simply ask them about what we've discovered since our arrival.
  • Immersing yourself in the place you're discovering and where you live.

THE BIG BATH A Place of Emulation

Nomadic Stage of the Montreuil Region and Guinguette in La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil

THE PROJECT

Since its creation in 2019, Le Grand Bain has been an association developing a summer festival venue that operates 9 to 10 weeks a year in the marshes of La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil (62). We offer multidisciplinary artistic events, artist residencies, special events, a program of artistic, culinary, and environmental activities, as well as a small guinguette in the marshes. The 2023/2024 season was marked by floods that disrupted the project's implementation by destroying all the equipment and severely impacting the association's activity site. 5.

The Nempont Saint Firmin Golf Course

The origins of the Nampont fiefdom date back to 858. The Nampont family succeeded one another, then the Bernatre family in 1335, the du Quesnoy family in 1377, and finally the Vaudricourt family. The fortified house was built in the 15th century. It is surmounted by a parapet walk, of which some machicolation brackets remain. Its polygonal plan is still surrounded by a water-filled moat. Adrien de Vaudricourt hosted Francis I at the Château de Nampont in 1517. A strategic location, the castle was the scene of numerous border raids. In the 18th century, it served as a customs post for collecting the salt tax. Occupied and damaged during the Second World War, the fortified house was subsequently restored.

Les Misérables - Montreuil-sur-Mer

In 1837, Victor Hugo visited Montreuil-sur-Mer. A few years later, it was in this fortified town that he would set the majority of the first part of his most famous novel, Les Misérables.

Faithful to this tribute, 500 volunteers don the costumes of their ancestors and those of the novel's characters each year for this Sound and Light show. A landmark spectacle where fiction and reality intertwine, a human story within the mysterious setting of the citadel.

Compagnie les Malins Plaisirs

His artistic focus is the exploration of French art, tracing its expressions from the Middle Ages to contemporary creation and successfully developed in the fields of opera, theatre, music and dance. In addition to local performances of adapted productions and tours in France and abroad, the company – a theatrical and operatic creation organization – develops three major events:
- The Baroque Spring in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is dedicated to artistic production from 1610 to 1750, with a focus on quality, powerful and high-level works, and specific programming in the surrounding towns;
- The Baroque School, which constitutes the educational component of the Baroque Spring and whose guiding principle is the transmission of the European artistic heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries to young audiences and their teachers;
- Les Malins Plaisirs in Montreuil-sur-Mer offers a repertoire encompassing the full spectrum of French taste, in its most playful, imaginative, and unexpected aspects!

The Charterhouse of Neuville-sous-Montreuil

In summary…
This story begins nearly 700 years ago when the Count of Boulogne founded a monastery at the foot of the ramparts of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
The monastic destiny that had transformed this building into the General Printing Works of the Carthusian Order came to an end at the beginning of the 20th century.
The monks gave way to a cultural center.
In 1914, the largest Belgian civilian hospital in Europe was established within its walls.
The last major transformation saw the premises house the hospice-asylum of the Montreuil-sur-Mer District Hospital Center (CHAM), from 1950 to 1998.
In the early 2000s, the Sisters of Bethlehem then temporarily restored a religious vocation to the Charterhouse.
Since 2008, a new destiny has been forged through a partnership private-public-nonprofit.

Valloire Abbey

Surrounded by woods, orchards, and gardens, in a secluded spot in the Authie Valley, like a nestled white dove, Valloires is a rare and astonishing example of 18th-century Baroque architecture. Quite unusual in this region, it is above all the only complete 18th-century Cistercian abbey in France.
